The Canberra Glassworks is unique to Australia – a state of the art glassmaking facility and gallery located in the oldest public building in Canberra.
History, the science of glassmaking and the creation of art in one convenient location to be enjoyed by day or by night.
Canberra Glassworks is Australia’s only cultural centre that is wholly dedicated to contemporary glass art. Canberra Glassworks provides opportunities for school tour groups to interact with and learn about glass making and the heritage of Canberra’s Kingston Powerhouse, built in 1915. Students can meet artists, see glassmaking as it happens, view exhibitions, take tours and have a hands-on experience working with glass.
Conveniently located just a 5 minute drive South East of the Parliamentary Precinct and with ample parking for coaches, it is easy to add Canberra Glassworks to the itinerary of any school tour to the Nation’s Capital and it provides a dynamic and quite unique experience for students.
The Visitor Experiences staff are happy to tailor a visit to the Canberra Glassworks to suit the individual needs of school groups. Most visits include a tour around the historic building and a tile fusing experience that gives each child a glass creation of their own to keep.
The Discovery Tour:
A behind the scenes tour of Canberra Glassworks where your students can witness first-hand the beauty of molten glass from the furnace and see glass being cut. Discover what an old power house looks like and how it has been renovated into one of the world’s most state of the art glass facilities. On this tour students will have access to parts of the building the public don’t normally visit as well as have the opportunity to talk to the artists who use the centre. Educational and fun, there is something in this tour for everyone to enjoy.
