4D2 from Ruth Allen - glass sculptor

4D2 exhibited at Canberra Glassworks is part of the Synergetic Series by Ruth Allen. This work is strongly influenced by the philosophies of Buckminster Fuller, whose theory of Synergetics was an attempt to create a scientifically-based poetics of experience.
Allen chooses to engage in repetition, reproduction and the singular as well as the interplay between pattern and randomness. The work is abstracted to resonate on many levels with organic forms, cellular structures and post-modern architectural compositions that proliferate in our natural and built environments.
4D2 is symbolically a model and a prompt for conscious thought. By illustrating relationships between matter, light, time and space, Allen challenges the viewer to engage in an inter-dimensional language. Using projected light, Allen illuminates the four dimensional qualities of glass by casting its three dimensional shadow upon a two dimensional surface.
