History

The Glass Workshop at the School of Art, Australia National University has been pivotal in establishing Canberra's international reputation as a centre for high quality glass art and artists.

The Glass Workshop was established in 1983 by the internationally acclaimed artist, Klaus Moje.  Klaus, along with subsequent workshop heads, Stephen Procter, Jane Bruce and (current head) Richard Whiteley, have set a standard of quality and diversity which has become the hallmark of graduates of the workshop.

While Canberra has had a strong culture of professional training and skills development in glass art, it has lacked the infrastructure required to support a thriving glass art industry into the future.  As a result many graduates have moved to establish themselves interstate or overseas where they can access specialist facilities and equipment essential for glass making, particularly large-scale kiln forming and glass blowing.

Bulit and funded by the ACT Government, Canberra Glassworks now provides a base for glass artists in Canberra where they can access  state-of-the-art-equipment, space and time to develop their art.

Canberra Glassworks is also  important facility for the Canberra community providing opportunities to engage with the fascinating art of glassmaking and enjoy the heritage of the historic Kingston Powerhouse.
