Residencies

Residencies at Canberra Glassworks

The artist-in-residence program provides experienced as well as emerging artists with a place to develop and create contemporary glass works and to further their practice. The program encourages mentorship and focuses on specific outcomes to help develop the creative culture that drive the Canberra Glassworks. The program works in conjunction with the exhibition and education programs to provide extended opportunities to participants and benefits to Glassworks' visitors.

Artist in Residence (AiR)

The Canberra Glassworks are offering up to three residencies in 2012 for established artists.
This residency is for artists who have achieved significant recognition for their technical and artistic work. The residency provides artists with a place and time for research and development, creating a new body of work, developing a particular idea or continuing along a theme.
AiR will be provided with a stipend of $1000, a designated work space and will have access to: kilns, flameworking, cold shop, hot shop and mould room. It is important to note that equipment and facilities are shared with a range of artists through a bookings system. Artists must be familiar and highly skilled with the equipment that they are proposing to use.
Share accommodation in The Chapel will be provided for interstate artists.
AiRs will be expected to participate in the residency on a full-time basis. Artists in residence make a significant contribution to the cultural life of the centre. It is part of the AiR role to engage with other artists in the centre and the public. AiRs will be required to give a public talk/demonstration.

Thomas Foundation co-funded Residencies (TFAiR)

The Canberra Glassworks Thomas Foundation residencies are an initiative of David and Barbara Thomas to work with Canberra Glassworks to support emerging and mid career Australian glass artists.
The Thomas Foundation residencies are funded on a cost-sharing basis; the residency will provide up to $2000 per artist towards equipment hire or similar, with this amount being matched by the recipient.
This residency supports emerging and established artists to access Canberra Glassworks to help them progress their careers by providing artists with a place and time for research and development, creating a new body of work, developing a particular idea or continuing along a theme. Artists must be familiar and highly skilled with the equipment that they are proposing to use.
Residents will be provided with a designated work space and interstate artists will be provided with share accommodation in The Chapel at Canberra Glassworks. The Thomas Foundation funds and artists' own contribution will go towards the hiring of equipment and facilities, but could also be applied to educational programs offered at Canberra Glassworks.
TFAiR residency applications are called for twice each year. At least five TFAiR are available in 2012. Only one CGW residency will be awarded to a single artist per year.
