design mattersA refurbishmentartsACT, Canberra Glassworks, Project Coordination, Tanner Architects and Canberra Glassworks Ltd staff worked together to implement Tanner Architects' adaptive reuse building design. The design was developed within a framework of Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD), and sensitively responds to the heritage fabric of JS Murdochs 1915 building and its surrounds. A nameJCM (Sydney) worked with artsACT to develop options for the name of the glass centre. The Chief Minister and Minister fo the Arts Jon Stanhope announced in late 2005 that the centre would be named Canberra Glassworks. 'Canberra' to recognise the growing renown and name of Canberra studio glass nationally and internationally. 'Glassworks' to recognise that the new facility is a working glassworks that provides access to glassmaking equipment and infrastructure for artists and opportunities to learn about and view glassmaking for the broader. A logoFiona Edge (Edge Design) developed the first logo for the centre incoprporating references to the heat and excitement of working with hot glass, the iconic shape of the Kingston Powerhouse, the name Canberra Glassworks, and the both cool and warm materials of the building. Ma@d Communications, as a Canberra Glassworks Ltd sponsor, has subsequently worked with the organisation to develop the logo for a range of applications.
